Mastering Your Mid-Years

Discover how this innovative show breaks away from the usual podcast landscape, forging a new path for aging and empowerment.

When I googled how many podcasts exist in 2023, the results were sobering. “There are over 5 million podcasts globally with over 70 million episodes between them.” Gulp. That seems like a lot of competition for someone putting out a new show. There were two ways I could use this information: 1. Go into a tailspin and tell myself the world does not need another podcast. 2. Put my head down and focus on getting my ideas out there. I went with the latter.

"Iʼve been writing about ways to age better over the past 4 years. Itʼs given me an excellent foundation. Iʼm excited to build on that. The podcast is the next step." -Heath Brockwell

After formulating my idea, I did more research to see if there was anything similar to what I had come up with. The queer podcasting space had lots of relationship, sex, and history podcasts. But not much was geared to the mid-year queer listener. It seemed a podcast about queer aging and empowerment was worth diving into more deeply. What follows is ‘Part 2’ of my journey. Also, a big shout out to Multitudes and their entry-level podcasting class. It asked some great questions about the audience for this project and gave me a boost of confidence.

What is the podcast about?

The New Maturity with Heath Brockwell is an empowering and inclusive show focused on helping you master your mid-years (45 years old+). With authentic and insightful discussions, it offers inspiration and support to queer individuals. Each episode shares practical insights for living well, celebrating diversity, and embracing the journey of aging with pride.

My show is different from other podcasts in the queer genre because …

Queer podcast generally tend to fall into three buckets:

  1. Relationships

  2. History

  3. Sex

All are important, but very few are speaking to or celebrating queer people as we age and conquer our mid-years.

This subject matter is a good fit for a podcast because …

Iʼve been writing about ways to age better over the past 4 years at The New Maturity. Itʼs given me an excellent foundation. Iʼm excited to build on that. The podcast is the next step.

I am the right person to produce this podcast because …
  • I enjoy talking to people.

  • Iʼm a good listener.

  • I want to make something that excites me!!!

Audiences will feel excited about and connected with my podcast because …

Talking about aging has been taboo in our culture. Not anymore! The New Maturity is here to help you embrace and talk about all the fantastic things that come with your mid-years.

This show brings something new to podcasting because …

Aging isnʼt something we normally talk about and itʼs something weʼre all doing.
